CASSANDRA C. JONES: PICTURES TAKEN #drawings

Eli Ridgway Gallery is pleased to present Cassandra C. Jones' second solo exhibition at the gallery. Photos Taken #drawings, refers to the artist's vast collection of other peoples photographs culled from the internet and her process of turning those images into a drawing device like charcoal or ink. For this exhibition, Jones has produced a body of work that literally and conceptually draws connections between how we organize and interpret imagery in the digital realm, where the archives of visual information are in a constant state of growth and evolution.
Merging "Remix Culture" with traditional mark making, Jones groups and connects stock photos of lightning bolts, end to end, to draw a series of circles. Each of these pieces is executed with a different and distinct line quality, including bold, thin, feathered, overlapping, meandering, and fluid linear scores. She uses this same approach to make increasingly complex, large-scale drawings of urban animals captured in mid air. Taking singular form amidst an abundance of images, dogs and rabbits appear to be leaping through time, space and different rural, suburban and municipal locales.
Jones creates other drawings by deconstructing single photographs of hot air balloons. By removing the backgrounds of the initial images, the balloons are reduced to isolated shapes and blocks of color. Further investigating methods for creating line and contour, the excerpts are then duplicated multiple times and meticulously arranged to illustrate woven patterns, silhouette profiles, botanic arrangements and aquatic creatures. These compositions allow singularity and multiplicity of image to exist simultaneously.
Jones received a BFA in Photography from California College of the Arts and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon. Her work has been displayed in various museums and gallery exhibitions including the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Arts in Oregon. Most recently she was nominated for the Santa Fe Prize which recognizes an artist working with photography who has recently completed a meaningful body of work. Jones' installation Good Cheer inaugurated the Eli Ridgway Hallway Project series in 2008.
