The Mill, Westport, New York

Fenestra Molendini — “window of the mill” — is a site-specific, eight-by-eight-foot stained glass window for the exhibition and performance space at The Mill, a restored 1952 grain mill in Westport, New York. Installed in the cathedral-like room where grain was once sifted and sorted, the multi-layered abstraction pays homage to the building’s former function and its orientation on the land.

Its imagery draws together three sources — nineteenth-century American landscape painting, the digital language of early-1980s video games, and nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock printing — carrying Ellingson’s layered abstraction into glass and light. The window was fabricated by Mayer of Munich.

The work joins permanent installations at The Mill by Adam Frelin, Ann Toebbe, Jillian Mayer, and Stephen Hendee.
