Paintings & Drawings

Travis Collinson
Eli Ridgway Gallery, San Francisco · July 23 – August 20, 2011

Eli Ridgway Gallery is pleased to present new works by artist Travis Collinson. In this exhibition of drawing and paintings, the artist continues his investigation of portraiture, perception and sense of place.

The works, though seemingly allegorical, are rooted in a sense of the absurd and abstract. Working from personal photographs and sketches derived from a process of automatism, the artist selectively couples elements from each, reinterpreting them at a larger scale. Drawing from the influences of both classical painting and minimal abstraction, Collinson's work creates a framework for people, nature and space to exist in an anxious state of entropy. With a skewed perspective and distortion of unassuming subjects, objects and environments, the artist's compositions are at once familiar and enigmatic.

Collinson has shown throughout California, most recently at the Berkeley Art Museum exhibition Hauntology. His works are in the collection of the Berkeley Art Museum as well as numerous private collections. Collinson holds a BFA in painting from California State University at Fullerton and has taught life drawing for the California College of the Arts in both the Extended Education Department and the Young Artist Studio Program. We are pleased to present his first solo exhibition in San Francisco.

“As in most of Collinson's pieces, not merely the caricatural qualities but the whole space expresses an emotional discomfort. … In any case, we catch it like a cold.”
Kenneth Baker · San Francisco Chronicle · August 2011
