Andy Vogt

Public Art

The San Francisco Arts Commission commissioned Andy Vogt to create a large, permanent wall sculpture for the redevelopment Terminal 1 at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Unfolding Space (in gold) consists of 400 pieces of rectangular architectural bronze tubing and measures 12 feet tall by 45 feet wide.

“I like the idea of folding space and time. It sounds like science fiction, but we do it every day to some extent as we move through the world. When we travel by air we are literally folded through space and into spaces of an extreme scale and timeframe—from massive airport architecture down jetways to the confines of our seats, traveling 600 mph while under pressure, our concept of space shifts to keep up with these changes.

But we also fold space in our minds—when we look at things we can perceive flat things as three dimensional or vice versa. The title Unfolding Space is meant to connect to the literal and figurative idea of how we see the world and how we move through it.”

This project was realized in close collaboration with the San Francisco Arts Commission, the San Francisco International Airport, Woods- Baggot Architecture, Chris French Metal, Inc., One Hat One Hand, and Atthowe Fine Art.
